While this approach has served us well in the past, to achieve success in today’s consumer-driven, app-focused world, a different approach is needed. An approach that centers on a user experience roadmap, rather than a product roadmap.

If you were to ask a group of app users why they love their favorite apps, you’d likely get a range of responses. Yet one answer is likely to come up more than any other: “I like it because it’s simple.”
Simplicity is one of the most valued traits in any application – mobile or otherwise – yet ironically, it’s also one of the most difficult to achieve, because many designers and developers confuse “simplicity” with ease of use and an aesthetically pleasing design.

I recently had lunch at a local fast-casual restaurant and noticed the establishment had changed its drink dispensing machine. In the past, they’d used the Coca-Cola Freestyle drink machine, with its modern, sleek design, touchscreen interface, and hundred-plus flavor combinations. Today however, the restaurant was back to a traditional drink dispenser, with standard offerings out of separate spouts. What would compel a business to revert to, what some may call, old technology? Especially with all of the accolades Coca-Cola seems to get from its custom dispenser.

Older adults are increasing in number and increasing in the frequency they use mobile apps, especially to manage their healthcare. Today, older adults – aged 65 and older – make up 13% of the U.S. population, and this population is expected to grow to 19% by 2030[8]. Mobile technology use among this population is growing with 27% of older adults owning a tablet, an e-book reader, or both, and 18% owning a smartphone[6]. As UX designers, we can influence the adoption of mobile technology by designing user interfaces that overcome typical usage barriers for older adults.
